GREECE – The Summer’s Almost Gone

The weather patterns have changed, according to the locals as well as the author of our pilot guides, Rod Heikell.  Winds are coming later, there have been more thunderstorms and rain than usual in the summer and we have certainly observed strong winds coming from the northwest.  Even though it is the third week in August, the sun is noticeably lower in the sky, taking longer to heat up in the morning, and cooling down sooner in the evening.  On the one hand, it’s pleasant for sleeping at night and for relaxing in the afternoon and evening. On the other hand, it’s not as tempting to jump into the water for an early morning dip and if there’s no hot water at shower time in the evening, showers are short!  In spite of little signs that summer is coming to a close, we feel that we still have at least 6 weeks of warm, sunny weather left which is about when we will be preparing to leave Greece anyway, so things are as they should be!

After checking back into Greece in Preveza, we began our journey south, stopping at Levkas Town to service our Volvo engines (500hrs) which was a big one.  Unfortunately some parts were not available and we didn’t want to hang around the harbour any longer than necessary so we bolted back to Ormos Varko (otherwise known as ‘Bungalow Bay’ so-named by some American friends) to enjoy clear waters and relative peace and quiet.  We did move once again to  catch up with the same American friends and their Danish friends, and enjoyed a fun dinner party and learning to play Mexican Train Dominoes!

We returned to Levkas Town almost a week later to have the remainder of the 500hr service completed and then bolted south again as soon as they finished.  Our next goal was to make our way slowly south in the Ionian and to see how far we could get before it was time to head back north again.
