An excellent highway followed by a scenic
coastal road (and thanks to a GPS) we found our way to our home for the next 10
days in Simon’s Town. Located high up on
the hill we had sweeping views of False Bay and beyond – gorgeous! Our gracious hosts in absentia (John Bentley and his wife Michele Brouard) were kind enough to lend us their guest quarters for the duration of our stay and we could not have been more spoiled! Simon's Town is a quiet, safe little place with some good restaurants and an easy drive to most places around the Cape Town area.
We really enjoyed our stay in the Cape Town
area and relished the fact that at last we could get out and walk! After 10 days in the bush camps in
game-viewing trucks (no walking), unable to stroll in Jo’burg and with only a
couple of days’ walks in Mozambique along the beach, we were chomping at the
bit to get out and explore. We did the
mandatory ‘hop-on-hop-off’ bus in Cape Town, wandered around Victoria and
Albert Waterfront, had High Tea at the Mount Nelson Hotel, walked through the
Company’s Garden and visited the nearby wineries at Constantia. We also had three days of driving to the
Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Somerset West wineries. Robin’s brother, Nick, had given us a
guideline of wineries to visit (a combination of old and new, some with
spectacular views, all with wonderful wines!). We spent a day visiting the
penguins at Boulder Beach in Simons Town as well as driving down to the Cape of
Good Hope. And we managed to sneak in a
‘beach day’ for just relaxing! What an
amazing destination with so much to see and do, we’d love to go back and see/do
more!
For those of you who know Tad personally,
you will appreciate that while he very much enjoyed our visit to South Africa,
he was becoming more and more impatient to get back to “Bisou”. Almost daily he would say “this is nice but I
am really itching to get back to the boat.”
Finally that day arrived and with a flight to Tunis via a short aircraft
change in Istanbul, we were back in Tunisia!
